Day 2

Although it was predicted that this be a raining day in Canberra, fortunately when we went out the Rex Motel, the rain stopped and it turned sunny suddenly. With curious and anticipated feeling, we began our second colourful day of the Murray-Darling Basin study tour.

As planned before, we visited the Murray-Darling Basin Commission on time.

In the MDBC meeting room, Mr Damian Green and Mr James Cleaver gave us presentations with topic of “Responsibilities, issues and challenges for the MDBC” and another topics related to water resources management in the MDB. They presented to us a lot of information about the Murray-Darling Basin, such as the Murray River initiative, river ecological system and environmental flow, water sharing and water trading markets, water storage and water supplies.

The laboratories of the ‘Commonwealth Scientific Industry Research Organization’ (CSIRO) visit

After lunch, we called on the laboratories of the CSIRO. In the guest room, Dr Ta-yan Leong, Mr Scott Kayworth and Mr Lu Zhang made al gave talks to us. Dr Ta-yan Leong told us the CSIRO’s history, basic information, achievements in recent years, and relationships with some scientific and research organizations in China. Mr Scott Kayworth and Mr Lu Zhang gave us a presentation with the titles of ‘Overview of the Water for Healthy Country Flagship and the Murray-Darling Basin Sustainable Yields Projects’ and ‘Impacts of Land Use Changes on Water Resources: Examples from Australia and China’ respectively.

Sight-seeing
We were lucky to have a short visit to the Parliament House and the Black Mountain Tower during the intensive study tour. The impressions with the beautiful scenes will be kept in our mind deeply for a long time.

After the whole day’s travelling, we enjoy the chinese traditional food-‘hot pot’ in the ‘Four Rivers Restaurant’.
